Google Expands Gemini AI for Smarter Home Controls

Google Expands Gemini AI for Smarter Home Controls

Google has announced the rollout of its Gemini AI-powered smart home controls to all users. The Gemini app now features a Google Home extension that allows seamless management of smart home devices. With this update, users can carry out more complex tasks using natural language, such as saying, “Turn on all the living room lights except the armchair light.”

This addition builds upon previous capabilities like adjusting lights, thermostats, and speakers, provided they are connected to a Google account.

First previewed last November, the extension enables Gemini to respond to detailed requests, such as dimming specific lights or checking the status of devices like porch lights. Users can also control non-sensitive devices, like lights, directly from their phone’s lock screen.

Additional updates include improved media controls, allowing volume adjustments and playback controls for smart speakers, displays, and TVs within the app. The thermostat control interface has also been redesigned to align with Google Home’s layout.

Security-related actions, such as managing cameras and locks, will now automatically redirect to the Google Home app, enhancing user experience. These updates follow a significant enhancement to Gemini’s capabilities, allowing it to perform complex tasks across multiple apps.

To use the Google Home extension, users simply need to sign in to Gemini with the same account used for Google Home and enable the feature. The rollout begins today and will continue over the coming weeks, giving users a more integrated and natural way to interact with their smart homes.
