Grammarly has announced plans to buy Superhuman, a popular email app, as part of its strategy to transform into a broader AI productivity platform. The company revealed that email is already the main way professionals use Grammarly, with its AI assistant helping edit over 50 million emails every week across more than 20 providers. By acquiring Superhuman, Grammarly gains a dedicated email product to better showcase its AI tools and improve user experiences.
But the ambitions don’t stop with email. Grammarly shared that it is working toward becoming a multi-product company offering hundreds of intelligent, task-specific AI agents. These agents are designed to support various professional tasks, such as writing sales pitches, customer memos, and support documents. The company believes email is the perfect starting point for this expansion, as professionals still spend several hours each day managing their inboxes.
This move comes amid growing competition from major tech companies like OpenAI and Google, which are also investing heavily in AI agents that can help users with complex tasks. Grammarly’s vision includes a future where users can rely on multiple AI helpers working together, from communication and marketing to customer support. The acquisition follows Grammarly’s purchase of the productivity startup Coda late last year. After that deal, Coda’s co-founder and CEO, Shishir Mehrotra, took over as the CEO of the combined company. Grammarly’s latest step underscores its determination to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape and to redefine itself as more than just a writing assistant. The coming months will reveal whether these ambitious plans will succeed as Grammarly faces stiff competition from larger AI players.
