Amazon Commits $13B to Expand Australia’s Data Center Network

Amazon has announced a major investment of A$20 billion (approximately $13 billion USD) to expand, operate, and maintain its data center infrastructure in Australia from 2025 through 2029. The initiative, disclosed in a company blog post, represents Amazon’s largest technology investment in the country and is primarily aimed at strengthening Australia’s capacity for artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

This investment will significantly enhance server capacity and support the rising demand for generative AI workloads. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the move, calling it a major vote of confidence in the nation’s economy and a step toward future-proofing productivity and digital infrastructure.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of the tech giant, is also investing in renewable energy as part of the broader expansion. The company plans to develop three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland. These facilities are expected to provide over 170 megawatts of combined energy capacity, aligning with Amazon’s global sustainability goals.

The move follows similar infrastructure commitments from Amazon in other regions. Earlier this month, the company announced a $10 billion data center investment in North Carolina and a separate $5 billion expansion in Taiwan. Additionally, Amazon recently revealed plans to inject at least $20 billion into data infrastructure development in Pennsylvania.

As global demand for AI and cloud services continues to surge, Amazon is not alone in ramping up investment. Other tech leaders, including Microsoft and Google, are also aggressively expanding their data center footprints to compete in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. These efforts aim to support enterprise and consumer needs for more powerful, scalable, and responsive computing resources.

The Australian expansion signals Amazon’s intent to further entrench itself in the Asia-Pacific market, while also contributing to the country’s transition toward more AI-driven technologies and cleaner energy solutions. As competition intensifies, such large-scale infrastructure projects are expected to play a critical role in determining leadership in the next generation of AI and cloud services globally.
