Anthropic has started rolling out a new “voice mode” for its Claude chatbot apps, now available in beta. This feature allows Claude users on mobile to engage in full spoken conversations, making interactions more natural and hands-free. The voice mode, initially in English, will expand to other languages over the coming weeks. Some users have already gained access, with the default powered by Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 model.
The feature enables users to speak to Claude and receive voice responses, while also displaying key points on the screen during conversations. It offers five distinct voice options and the ability to switch seamlessly between text and voice interactions. After each chat, users can view transcripts and summaries, providing a comprehensive conversational experience.
Voice conversations count toward regular usage caps, typically limiting free users to about 20-30 interactions. Paid subscribers, however, can link Claude to Google Workspace, enabling voice mode to access their Google Calendar and Gmail emails.
This integration enhances the chatbot’s usefulness by allowing it to manage schedules and emails through voice commands. Additionally, enterprise plans include Google Docs integration. The feature caters to users who prefer speaking over typing, similar to other AI platforms like OpenAI’s voice chat or Google’s Gemini Live.
Anthropic’s CPO Mike Krieger confirmed in an early March interview that the company was developing voice features, noting ongoing talks with Amazon, a major investor, and ElevenLabs, a startup specializing in voice technology. It’s uncertain if any partnerships have resulted in further development.
The voice mode aims to make AI interactions more intuitive and accessible, especially for users engaged in multitasking or on the move. As AI companies continue to refine voice capabilities, Anthropic’s rollout promises to enhance user experience with more natural and efficient communication with Claude.
