Apple is rolling out AI-powered summaries for App Store reviews with its iOS 18.4 update, currently available in public beta. This feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, analyzes user reviews and generates a brief summary to help users quickly understand an app’s overall feedback. The summaries, created using large language models, will be refreshed weekly for apps and games that meet Apple’s undisclosed review threshold.
Users can report inaccurate summaries by tapping and holding the review, while developers can raise concerns through App Store Connect. Initially, this feature will only be available in the U.S. and in English, with plans to expand to other languages and regions later this year. iPad users will also get access to this feature through iPadOS 18.4.
While AI-generated summaries make it easier for users to evaluate apps, they also raise concerns about potential abuse. Developers may attempt to manipulate their app ratings by generating fake positive reviews to influence the AI-generated summary. This could mislead users who rely solely on these summaries rather than reading full reviews. Apple’s AI will need to accurately capture both positive and negative feedback to ensure transparency and reliability.
Apple is not alone in leveraging AI for review summaries. Amazon introduced AI-generated product review summaries in 2023, and Google has implemented similar AI-driven features for Google Maps and its Gemini AI platform.
The AI-powered summaries are currently available to beta testers and will roll out to all users in April with the official release of iOS 18.4. Other upcoming features in this update include expanded Apple Intelligence language support, Visual Intelligence for iPhone 15 Pro, enhanced Siri control options, the ability to pause app downloads, and AI-driven notification prioritization. Apple’s latest AI integration highlights its continued effort to enhance user experience through intelligent automation.
