OpenAI has introduced a new beta feature for ChatGPT that allows paying users to schedule reminders and set recurring tasks. This feature, called “tasks,” is now rolling out to ChatGPT users worldwide.
With tasks, users can now ask ChatGPT to remind them of important events, like “Remind me when my passport expires in six months,” and the AI assistant will send a push notification on any platform where tasks are enabled.
Additionally, users can set recurring requests, such as “Every Friday, give me a weekend plan based on my location and the weather forecast.”
The task feature marks OpenAI’s first step toward developing AI models capable of acting more autonomously, known as AI agents. While this is a limited version of that concept, it brings practical benefits to users, similar to digital assistants like Siri and Alexa.
However, ChatGPT goes a step further by offering more customized, scheduled information requests that previous assistants could not handle. Users can access the task feature through the ChatGPT web app by selecting “4o with scheduled tasks” from the dropdown menu. From there, they can create reminders or actions by messaging the AI assistant. ChatGPT may even suggest tasks based on previous interactions.
While ChatGPT can now browse the web on a set schedule, it cannot run continuous searches or make purchases. OpenAI has emphasized that this is just the start, and the company is using this beta phase to gather feedback before expanding the feature to mobile apps and the free tier. Although currently unavailable in Advanced Voice Mode, the task feature is an essential step towards creating more sophisticated AI assistants in the future.
