ChatGPT has experienced rapid growth, doubling its weekly active users in less than six months, reaching 400 million by February 2025. According to a report by Andreessen Horowitz, the AI chatbot initially gained traction due to its novelty, but the introduction of powerful updates like GPT-4o, Advanced Voice Mode, and the o1 model series largely drives its recent surge.
These new capabilities significantly boosted usage, especially between April and October 2024. Mobile adoption has also been strong, with a steady increase of 5% to 15% each month. Currently, 175 million of ChatGPT’s total weekly active users access the app on mobile devices.
Despite its dominance, competition in the AI chatbot space is intensifying. DeepSeek quickly became the second most popular chatbot globally within just ten days, capturing 15% of ChatGPT’s mobile user base.
DeepSeek users have also shown higher engagement compared to other AI chatbots like Perplexity and Claude, although ChatGPT still leads overall in both web and mobile usage. The report highlights that ChatGPT remains the top AI app by unique monthly web visits and mobile active users, based on data from market intelligence provider Similarweb.
