General Motors (GM) is partnering with Nvidia to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) across the automaker’s operations, including manufacturing, robotics, and self-driving vehicles. The collaboration was announced by Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang during his keynote speech at the GTC conference in San Jose. Huang emphasized the growing importance of autonomous vehicles and expressed excitement about creating AI solutions for GM in three key areas: manufacturing, enterprise operations, and in-vehicle applications.
This expanded partnership will see Nvidia provide the necessary AI infrastructure, specifically graphics processing units (GPUs), to support GM in developing its own AI systems. Nvidia has a long history of working with the automotive sector, supplying technology to major companies like Tesla and Waymo. Their innovative platform, which includes the DriveOS operating system, offers real-time AI processing to enhance driving features and cockpit functions.
Huang noted Nvidia’s flexible approach to collaboration, highlighting their ability to build training and simulation computers alongside self-driving hardware. GM aims to leverage Nvidia’s expertise by utilizing various AI products to create tailored systems, although the financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
As part of the collaboration, GM will employ Nvidia Omniverse alongside Cosmos to train AI models for manufacturing. This technology will enable the automaker to create digital replicas of its factories, allowing for virtual testing of new production methods without interrupting current operations. The partnership will help optimize processes like material handling, transport, and precision welding.
Additionally, GM will integrate Nvidia Drive AGX into its vehicles, enhancing future advanced driver-assistance systems and safety features. In response to evolving market needs, GM is refocusing efforts, having recently ceased funding its commercial robotaxi initiative. The automaker is streamlining operations by merging its self-driving car subsidiary, Cruise, with its in-house driver-assistance development, paving the way for future advancements in autonomous personal vehicles.
