Google Brings Veo 2 Video Generator to Gemini Users

Google has integrated its Veo 2 video-generating AI model into Gemini Advanced, the premium version of its AI platform. This move marks Google’s latest step in the growing competition with OpenAI’s Sora and other major players in the AI video space. Veo 2 is now accessible to Gemini Advanced subscribers, who can create eight-second video clips in 720p resolution using a 16:9 aspect ratio. These videos can be directly shared on platforms like YouTube and TikTok or downloaded in MP4 format with SynthID watermarks to mark AI-generated content.

Access to Veo 2 is available through a model selection menu in the Gemini apps. However, Google notes that there are limits on the number of videos a user can generate each month, and the tool is not currently available to those on Google Workspace business or education plans.

Google is also experimenting with ways to expand Veo 2’s use through its Labs platform. One such feature is Whisk, which allows users to generate new images using other images as prompts. A related update, Whisk Animate, now lets users turn generated images into eight-second videos using Veo 2. These features are exclusive to Google One AI Premium subscribers, who pay $20 per month for early access to experimental tools.

While Veo 2’s current capabilities are relatively simple, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has suggested that future developments will integrate Veo with the broader Gemini model to enhance its ability to interpret the physical world. This points toward more advanced multimedia AI tools in the future.

However, not all responses to Veo 2 are positive. Many creators are concerned about the impact of video-generating AI on creative jobs.
