Google Opens NotebookLM to Younger Users Amid AI EdTech Push

Google has expanded access to its AI note-taking app NotebookLM, making it available to Google Workspace for Education users of all ages and to consumers ages 13 and up. Previously restricted to users 18 and older, the move aims to help younger students better engage with class materials using AI-powered study tools.

NotebookLM offers features like podcast-style Audio Overviews, interactive Mind Maps for visualizing concepts, and a new Video Overviews feature that converts notes, PDFs, and images into visual presentations. These tools are designed to enhance learning and improve how students interact with educational content.

To address concerns over privacy and safe AI use, Google has implemented stricter content moderation policies for users under 18 and ensures that chats and uploaded materials are not reviewed by humans or used to train AI models.

This expansion comes as competition in the AI education sector intensifies, with OpenAI recently introducing a study mode for ChatGPT. The shift signals growing efforts by major tech companies to integrate AI tools into learning environments, providing students with innovative ways to study and organize information while balancing safety and privacy considerations.
