Lenovo Group, the leading PC manufacturer in the world, is set to use the advancements of AI startup DeepSeek to boost its sales of AI-enabled products. Chief Executive Yang Yuanqing expressed enthusiasm in a recent interview, describing DeepSeek’s rapid rise as “very positive” for both the industry and Lenovo itself.
He highlighted that DeepSeek’s new large language model offers greater efficiency at lower costs, making AI more accessible to a broader audience. This breakthrough is particularly significant for consumer devices; DeepSeek’s recent model outperforms U.S. systems while using less powerful chips and lower processing power.
This development is expected to promote the use of generative AI on edge devices like PCs and smartphones. It could also encourage more enterprises to adopt AI technology, which Yang mentioned is not necessarily costly.
In recent weeks, numerous Chinese companies across various sectors, including software and telecommunications, have rushed to integrate DeepSeek’s model. Lenovo has introduced several AI products over the last year, and it recently announced that it has woven DeepSeek’s technology into its offerings, including AI PCs, tablets, and smartphones.
Users can access DeepSeek services through Lenovo’s AI agent, Xiaotian. Yang forecasts that AI PCs will represent 25% of Lenovo’s global PC shipments by 2025, building on the more than 10% they made up last year in China, where these products are already widely available.
According to IDC data, Lenovo maintained a market share of 24.5% in the last quarter of 2024, with global shipments rising by 4.8% last year. Analysts believe that Lenovo will greatly benefit from DeepSeek’s advancements as investments in AI shift more toward software and personal devices.
Moreover, despite concerns over new tariffs on Chinese goods, Yang is optimistic that these won’t significantly impact Lenovo. The company’s diverse global manufacturing capabilities ensure its operations remain strong.
