Notion has expanded its productivity platform by integrating two leading large language models (LLMs), OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 and Anthropic’s Claude 3.7, into its workspace. This move aims to enhance its enterprise capabilities by offering faster, more accurate AI-powered tools within a single dashboard.
The updated Notion AI toolkit includes features like AI meeting notes, advanced enterprise search, and a new research mode. A standout addition is the ability for users to chat with and switch between GPT-4.1 and Claude 3.7 directly inside the workspace, minimizing the need to switch tabs or tools. Early adopters of these features include OpenAI, Ramp, Vercel, and Harvey.
Rather than relying solely on external reasoning models, Notion has chosen a hybrid approach by combining third-party LLMs with its own models. This blend allows the company to fine-tune its tools for specific use cases, such as fast searches, real-time transcription, and summarization, which don’t always require deep reasoning capabilities.
According to Sarah Sachs, Notion’s AI Engineering Lead, the models have been optimized using internal data and feedback from testers to ensure speed, relevance, and data privacy. This approach ensures that Notion’s AI tools can deliver near-instant responses while safeguarding user information.
The new enterprise search feature lets users connect tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, GitHub, and Gmail, enabling Notion AI to scan both internal documents and external sources for information. In research mode, Notion can draft documents by analyzing all available data, including live web sources.Users on Notion’s Business and Enterprise plans with the AI add-on now have access to these upgrades. While Notion’s integration of third-party models positions it as a strong player, it still faces competition from the model providers themselves, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which offer their own productivity tools.
