OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle have announced a massive $500 billion investment plan to develop advanced AI data centers in the United States. Named The Stargate Project, this initiative will build infrastructure to support artificial intelligence advancements.
The announcement was made during a White House press conference attended by Masayoshi Son, Sam Altman, and Larry Ellison, representing their respective companies. MGX is also listed as one of the primary equity funders, with plans to invest over four years.
According to OpenAI, the first data center buildout is already underway in Texas, with evaluations for additional sites across the country.
Key technology partners in this initiative include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI, who will collaborate closely to design and operate these state-of-the-art computing systems.
Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI are taking the lead in managing the operational aspects of the centers.
In a related development, Microsoft confirmed updates to its long-standing partnership with OpenAI, which remains active through 2030.
Microsoft retains exclusive access to OpenAI’s intellectual property and API, along with revenue-sharing arrangements.
However, a significant shift in their agreement now allows OpenAI to build additional capacity outside of Microsoft Azure. Microsoft still holds the right of first refusal for these new expansions, ensuring their involvement in OpenAI’s future infrastructure.
The Stargate Project represents a critical step in advancing AI infrastructure, addressing the growing demand for computing power to train and deploy cutting-edge AI models.
With its initial focus on the U.S., this collaboration aims to establish the country as a leader in AI technology development. This initiative also signifies a strengthened alliance between tech giants and financial powerhouses, aligning their resources to shape the future of artificial intelligence.
