OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is set to air its first-ever television commercial during this year’s Super Bowl, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The Super Bowl is one of the most prestigious advertising platforms, drawing millions of viewers and providing brands with an opportunity to create a lasting impact.
OpenAI’s decision to advertise follows in the footsteps of competitors like Google, which promoted its AI technology during last year’s game. The company has not yet commented on its plans.
Super Bowl commercials are known for their high cost, with a 30-second slot for the 2025 game selling for as much as $8 million, an increase from the $7 million price tag for last year’s broadcast on CBS.
The 2024 Super Bowl drew an estimated 210 million viewers, making it an ideal event for companies looking to maximize their exposure. The upcoming 59th Super Bowl will take place on February 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET in New Orleans at the Caesars Superdome, which can accommodate 83,000 spectators.
OpenAI, led by Sam Altman and partly owned by Microsoft, launched ChatGPT in late 2022. The AI tool quickly gained popularity, reaching over 300 million weekly active users within two years. The company is currently in discussions to secure up to $40 billion in funding, bringing its estimated valuation to $300 billion.
As part of its growth strategy, OpenAI appointed its first chief marketing officer, Kate Rouch, in December last year, signaling an increased focus on branding and public engagement.
By investing in a Super Bowl ad, OpenAI is making a significant move to establish itself as a mainstream tech brand. With AI becoming a dominant force in technology, the company’s presence in such a major event highlights its ambitions to reach a broader audience.
