OpenAI has introduced new AI models for voice generation and transcription, aiming to enhance automated systems that interact with users. The latest text-to-speech model, “gpt-4o-mini-tts,” generates more natural and expressive speech, allowing developers to customize tone and style.
Users can instruct it to adopt specific speech patterns, such as sounding like a “mad scientist” or a “mindfulness teacher.” According to OpenAI, this level of customization enables businesses to create more engaging and context-aware interactions.
Additionally, OpenAI has replaced its older Whisper transcription model with two new options, “gpt-4o-transcribe” and “gpt-4o-mini-transcribe.” These models, trained on diverse, high-quality audio datasets, promise improved accuracy, especially in noisy environments and with accented speech.
Unlike Whisper, which often fabricated words or entire passages, the new models are designed to reduce errors and provide more reliable transcripts. However, OpenAI acknowledges some limitations, particularly in languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, where the word error rate remains high.
Unlike previous transcription models that were open-source, OpenAI has decided not to release these new models for public use. The company cites their larger size and complexity as reasons for keeping them proprietary, stating that they are not suitable for running on personal devices. Instead, OpenAI is focusing on refining models that align with specific user needs.
